I read this whole short story series two years ago. It’s pretty good, I just wish there had been at least some sliver of a semblance of redemption for the vampires instead of them being TOTALLY EVIL.

12363064

Fourteen-year-old Chloe witnesses her mother’s murder at the hands of a vampire. Before the vampire can kidnap her, there is an unexpected rescue by a group of vampire hunters. Overwhelmed by the feeling of safety, Chloe passes out and they whisk her away to their small community.

When Chloe wakes, she comes face to face with the only other living relative, besides her mother, whom she has ever met: her grandfather. Chloe’s mother kept her hidden from the family; now, Chloe tries to unveil the family secrets.

Through her grandfather, she learns her mother was a vampire hunter. In fact, her entire family is descended from the powerful bloodlines of vampire hunters. Chloe agrees to join the family she has never known for one reason only: Chloe vows to kill the vampire responsible for her mother’s murder.

With vengeance in her soul, Chloe is even more determined to follow through on her vow when she discovers the true identity of her enemy and how he is connected to her.

The Vampire Hunter’s Daughter is the first in a series of short stories by Jennifer Malone Wright.

To start off, nerd boys forever! They are far, far underrated and if only nerdy love interests were more prevalent in literature. *sigh*

This is a short story, so this will be a short review. I adored Gail and Joy’s relationship and the sororal love between them. This was a splendid piece that made me grin, giggle, and beam with happiness in just the space of a few dozen pages. You may have already guessed that I loved Jim to bits and now I am dying to get my hands on the rest of this series to read about Joy’s adventures.

In summation, this is an excellent sample of the author’s work that left me wanting to try more!

The Bone Knife

Rae knows how to look out for family. Born with a deformed foot, she feigns indifference to the pity and insults that come her way. Wary of all things beautiful, Rae instantly distrusts their latest visitor: an appallingly attractive faerie. Further, his presence imperils the secret her sister guards. But when the local townspeople show up demanding his blood, Rae must find a way to protect both her sister’s secret and their guest. Even if that means risking herself.

Why don’t the other high fantasy authors just come out and admit they’re in cahoots to break my heart into a billion tiny pieces? This is a short story that I think comes to less than twenty pages in print, but it still managed to leave me very saddened. Despite the length, we still get a good glimpse into the world of Nälu and Johari’s inner turmoil. I think Ms. Mbewe has certainly proven that she can write quite exceptionally and leave you wanting more of her world.

This was a beautiful piece and I mean to look into the rest of the series!

In case you didn’t know, I bloody ADORE Ms. Khanani’s other book, THORN (the Grimm tale of THE GOOSE GIRL with a middle-eastern influence and a swoon-worthy prince). THE BONE KNIFE introduces Rae, the heroine of the companion trilogy to THORN.

Since it is a short story, I can say a whole lot without being spoiler-ific, but I will say that Rae was a very compelling and sympathetic character and I particularly liked the way the relationship between her and her sisters was portrayed.

I will be watching for that trilogy! =D
