I know I’ve featured this before, but the publisher just switched distributors, so we’re trying to get the rankings back up. Read my interview with the author here. (This series is on my Shelf of Awesome. Do read it!)

18631388

Within these pages lie kingdoms with castles and princes who fall in love with fair maidens, but make no mistake−this is no fairytale.

His father’s kingdom is on the brink of upheaval and at the center of it all is an ordinary girl who could be the key to its undoing. When faced with the ultimate choice, will he choose the girl he’s falling in love with or the kingdom he has sworn to protect?

An ordinary girl with an extraordinary past. All she wants is to be free. What she doesn’t realize is that freedom comes with a price she can’t afford to pay. She’s forced to accept the proposal of a prince she despises, even though her heart belongs to someone else . . . his brother.

Seventeen-year-old Rema lives in a brutal kingdom where travel between regions is forbidden, people are starving, and looking at someone the wrong way can mean death. Nineteen-year-old Darmik is the king’s son and Commander of the King’s Army. He spends his days roving the island, doing his father’s bidding and trying to maintain control over the people.

When a chance encounter throws Rema and Darmik together, they share an instantaneous connection, but any sort of relationship between them is strictly forbidden. Darmik’s brother, the Crown Prince, notices Darmik’s interest in Rema and, in a calculated, political move, blackmails her. Faced with an impossible choice, Rema is forced to sacrifice her heart in order to save her family.

As Rema is taken to the palace with the Crown Prince, Darmik confronts the growing rumor that a legitimate blood heir to the throne exists and is trying to overthrow Darmik’s family. In Darmik’s quest to hunt down and kill the threat, he discovers that nothing is as it seems. Locked in the king’s castle, Rema finds herself a key player in a massive power struggle. When Darmik shows up, she’s not sure if she can trust him. The line between friends, enemies, and loyalty becomes blurred. As truths are unlocked, Rema understands that she just might be the key to finding the rightful heir and restoring peace to the kingdom… if she can manage to stay alive long enough.

5 out of 5 stars

The next person who says books can’t hurt you emotionally will be slapped with this novella. There was one point where I had to put down my Kindle because I was getting so tense and anxious that I couldn’t take it anymore. Then when I started reading again, my heart was literally racing with terror.

This novella must be good and I have decided to bestow it with five stars because it got me all tangled up and worried and nervous and angry and generally neurotic. Within the first few pages I was invested in the story.

The story itself was rather short, but still managed to break me and I find myself maliciously wishing for some diabolical and distinctly unpleasant fate to befall all but three of the characters. I am looking forward to the novel, but hope those characters’ tales take a happier twist than what happened here.

My only complaint would probably be that there was a supporting character who plays a significant role and I wish he had been introduced or at least hinted at sooner. His emergence just felt kind of sudden and I think that could have been handled more smoothly.

All in all, another book to add to my list of novellas that broke my heart in under 100 pages. I recommend it to fans of YA fantasy who don’t mind a sad, open ended read.

I’m working on my 5-star review for this one. Very engaging, utterly heartbreaking.

21892106

From bestselling author Kaitlyn Davis comes a fantasy adventure perfect for fans of Throne of Glass, Graceling, and Game of Thrones.

In the land of Ourthuro, cruelty is a way of life. The king rules with an iron fist and no one dare defy him–no one except his daughter. Princess Leena is keeping a dangerous secret, she has fallen in love with a soldier and it would mean both of their lives if her father ever discovered their affair.

But Leena will risk it all to be with the man she loves–her heart, her life, her freedom. And when her brother’s birthday celebration takes a dangerous turn, Leena is forced to make a decision that will change the fate of her nation and eventually the world.

The Golden Cage is a prequel novella to The Shadow Soul (A Dance of Dragons #1)–available now!

Alternate Cover Edition for ASIN B005U8GQT6

With one last look, one final search of the lines of his face for some sign, Kira turned and ran away from the sound of the man she loved laughing in the face of her death.

When Kira Dawson moves to South Carolina, she meets Luke, a blond goofball who quickly becomes her best friend, and Tristan, a mysterious bad boy who sends shivers down her spine. Kira knows they’re keeping secrets, but when she discovers Tristan’s lust for blood and her own dormant mystical powers, Kira is forced to fight for her life and make the heartbreaking decision between the familiar comfort of friendship and the fiery passion of love.

4 out of 5 stars

Okay. So here we have a paranormal romance with a vampire. No, don’t roll your eyes. Yes, he’s over 150. Yes, she’s inexplicably drawn to him. But what if I told you she’s one of the only humans who can kill a vampire and she does it by shooting concentrated sunlight out her hands, huh? Do I have your attention now? Good.

The plot:
When I realized this was a vampire story, I was a little put off. I had high hopes for this story and when I stumbled across that, my heart kind of sank. But Ms. Davis surprised me and made a story that was both fun and with a twist on vampires I haven’t seen before. The story develops well and I did get into it, even if the casual dating mentality of a few of the characters in this book was kind of a point down for me.

The characters:
Kira was a fun heroine. She has no idea who or what she is at the beginning and has to learn to cope with her newfound abilities and the vampires who want to drink he dry so they can become invincible.

Tristan, out love interest, is aptly named. One of the rare vampires who has maintained his soul, he belongs neither to vampire kind nor humankind.

Luke is Kira’s best friend and takes on a rather bug brother/mentor role. He is a protector, a human who can immobilize vampires by causing them extreme pain, but he can’t kill them. He is NOT Tristan’s biggest fan and is convinced that the vampire is just using Kira. Still, he means well and I kind of found the rivalry between him and Tristan amusing.

This was a good book overall. And did I mention it’s free on Amazon? (Link below.) So if you like vampires, paranormal romance, or chicks who shoot light out their hands, go check it out!

So lately I’ve seen a lot of books getting revamped covers. Most of them I think were for the better, but there are one or two I disagree with. Anyway, I thought I’d just share them with you guys.

So what do you think? I like all the remakes better. What are your favorite cover revamps? What do you make of these? Were they all improvements?
