Xarrid Yarrister is barely surviving…he’s living a life in hell.

The love of his life, Saylan, has vanished into thin air, and his telepathic powers can’t connect with her mind.

Saylan, a Guardian of Vesturon, doesn’t know herself anymore. Kidnapped by the Xanthians, she’s had a robotic chip implanted in her brain and is now a prisoner in her own body, lacking free will, at the beck and call of her cruel masters.

For over a year Xarrid has been on the hunt. The Guardians have searched everywhere for her, but when they finally bring her home, Xarrid discovers her memory is gone. He’s determined to restore his love’s mind back to its healthy state. Removing the chip can cost Saylan her life, but doing nothing will cause irreparable brain damage. What choice will Xarrid make and how steep of a price will Saylan have to pay?

I’ve waited months for this book and I am very, very sad to see this series end. I genuinely adore the Guardians and if I ever got the chance to pick any love interest from one of my paranormal romance books, I would most likely take a Vesturion Guardian. This book deals with darker themes than the other titles in the series, delving into PTSD and rape recovery, and is not for younger readers. There were some parts where I noticed that colloquial Earth slang had crept into the dialogue where it wasn’t before. I wish that hadn’t happened, but I still loved this story and won’t harp on it too much.

The plot:

The suspense in this series is mostly piled on at the beginning with the latter portion more devoted to wrapping up the many subplots (with characters who I adore). Nonetheless, I do which there had been a more focused point of conflict. While the main “question” appeared to be whether or not Saylan would be able to cope with what happened to her, I thought that there could have been a lot more done with what the author had.

Thus far in the series, we have learned that Vesturions practice staunch pre-marital celibacy, but this installment there is an exploration into what happens when one of them doesn’t have any choice in the matter. I thought it especially sad when, after learning what had been done to her, Saylan’s father is surprised to learn Xarrid still wants her. It’s not a theme often brought up in YA and I understand why, though I think Ms. Hargrove handled it well.

The characters:

Aww…Xarrid. Xarrid is the main perspective of the story and I admit I wasn’t particularly fond of him in the earlier books, but here all I cared about was him finding his ladylove and making her happy. He has a lot of anger and a lust for revenge in the beginning that I don’t consider healthy, but it’s only because of Saylan and his desire to shield and protect her.

Saylan has been through a lot and it takes her awhile to even remember her name. It was impossible not to feel sympathy for her. I was in torment as to whether or not she would be able to pull through the traumatic memories and nightmares that haunted her long after her rescue.

I love Jurek. The shapeshifting, sarcastic, fiercely loyal, secretly good leader of the Praestani was a near-constant presence here, helping Xarrid to find Saylan, then to aid in Saylan’s recovery, and the hunt for her captors. We learn a good deal more about Jurek and the Praestani in general and I think it’s a terrible pity that Jurek’s romance is in an Adult book, because I would have loved to read it (but I am a pre-established prude and that probably won’t happen for awhile).

There were a lot of subplots and loose ends that were tied off here, making for a clean end to a phenomenal series. Guardians, I will miss you and I have my fingers crossed for a spin-off series in the future!

The Turn (Guardians, #3)

There. Will. Be. Blood.
After the Council hands down a severe punishment,
A Guardian declares war on the Angel world.

Before the end
Lives will be lost
Love will be tested
And blood WILL flow…

After the ginormous cliffhanger at the end of the previous book, we pick up not long from where we left off. We learn early how it was that the twins died. I figured it was something like that, but…it really was horrible.

Okay, what’s about to follow is a bit spoiler-ific, so skip the next paragraph is you haven’t read the earlier book!

After her brother is sentenced to hell, Mika kind of goes nuts and I don’t blame her. I personally think that the Council sucks, too, I just wish she hadn’t killed so many people on her road to revenge. The twist about Rio was awesome, especially since I didn’t like the end of the previous book.

Emmy and Marcus are utterly adorable in this story, as they always have been. They still can’t kiss, but they’re so still cute! (And I still hate Amaena until the end of this one. Sorry.)

I enjoyed this book very much. I wish I’d discovered it sooner. No, wait, that’s a lie. I’m glad that I found it when I did so that I could go and read the next!

The Fallout (Guardians, #2)

Just because she has wings,
doesn’t mean she’s an Angel…

It’s front page news on every Angel gossip rag:
“Marcus & Ameana: Gone The Way Of “Brad & Jennifer.”
So, Who Is The “Angelina?” Emmy Baxter—a mere mortal!”

Ameana tries to avoid her ex and his new love by focusing
on the other evil out to destroy the team. But soon her pain
turns to fury.

And before the end…a girl plots revenge, a leader is on the edge
and an Angel falls.

I was not expecting to love this book as much as I did. I could get SO mad at Amaena, yet I did sympathized with her on occasion. We find out about her Core, that is, how she died, and learn things about her that make her more relatable.

Still, the truth is that I wanted to slap her silly for most of the story. I thought she was being a selfish little wench, keeping Marcus and Emmy apart. Does she realize that a person who does something to cause someone else pain because it gives them pleasure is the definition of “sadist”? Then there was the whole BS about her spending six days in a motel room making out with the leader of the demons she was supposed to be fighting whilst mentally criticizing Marcus for not putting the mission first. Hello? Is the term “hypocrite” in your vocabulary?

I must admit, I wanted Amaena to die. It’s mean, I know, I just had a hard time feeling sorry for her when she was being so vicious. Even when Emmy was dying, Amaena wouldn’t give Marcus his Ra back so that he could kiss her goodbye because she “wanted to keep that for herself.” Not nice and not what you do for someone you really love more than yourself.

Yet there were parts of this book that were told from Emmy’s perspective and those were my favorite and I think they made up for the rest. I did enjoy this book, despite the passionately outraged commentary earlier and I immediately went and snapped up the next one.

All in all, a pretty good read!

So lately I’ve seen a lot of books getting revamped covers. Most of them I think were for the better, but there are one or two I disagree with. Anyway, I thought I’d just share them with you guys.

Review: The Girl (Guardians, #1) by Lola St.Vil

The Girl (Guardians #1)

After his death, Marcus found the love of his life…

Unfortunately it’s not his sexy, telekinetic angel girlfriend — it’s Emmy Baxter… a human.

Between torture, demon attacks, and midterms, Marcus and Emily must fight their feelings for a devastating prophecy has predicted:

“Should Angel and Human unite, humanity will perish.”

Blurb and cover from Goodreads.

5 out of 5 stars

So I have heard some really good things about this author and this series from Stephanie over at REVIEWING WHAT I’M READING, but I figured “angels aren’t my thing.” Then I took part in the cover reveal for the fourth book in the series and then, well, I couldn’t read them out of order! And this is one of those times when my mild OCD worked for good because otherwise, I would’ve missed out on this awesome story! This is one of those books that make me think “darn, I wish I could make people obsess over fictional characters like I’m doing now.”

Did Lola St. Vil write something original? No. She took the whole “guardian angel” idea, turned it on its head, spun it around, shook it up, and flipped it inside out. I have never even heard of a twist on angels that is this unique. You’re going to have to read the book yourself to find out what I’m talking about, but I’ll just say that you’re in for a treat!

Emmy is a normal girl until guys with automatic weapons turn up at her school and she is rescued/kidnapped by a team of unearthly gorgeous teenagers who drag her into the world of ancient pacts and the eternal battle for lost souls. The leader of her rescuers/kidnappers is Marcus, an angel tasked with heading the team that is to keep the devil from a precious map that good and evil have fought over for centuries. The attraction between Emmy and Marcus is immediate and mutual, but Marcus is already taken, by his telekinetic, possessive, utterly beautiful second in command at that. Not to mention that if Marcus and his team fail in their mission, everyone will die, but if they succeed, he and his team will be taken into paradise, never to return to earth. Sucks, right?

This book had some typos, I admit. And I did get a bit frustrated with Emmy, particularly in one scene when she appeared to be attempting to steal Marcus. But for the most part, I enjoyed the story immensely. And I’m not sure if it was deliberate on the author’s part or not, but I especially liked the subtle pro-life story surrounding Emmy’s birth.

I definitely recommend it to anyone interested in a good YA PNR!
